Unveiled in Europe the facelifted C-HR will arrive here in December with the option of a hybrid engine.
Hybrid accounts for almost 45 per cent of Camry sales, 40 per cent of Corolla hatch sales and 40 per cent of new RAV4 sales.
Adding a hybrid C-HR to the mix makes good marketing sense.
Toyota’s Sean Hanley said the company was committed to increasing the availability of its advanced hybrid drivetrain across a broader range of cars.
“We now offer hybrid power in some of our most popular models including Camry, Corolla hatch, Prius and RAV4, and its addition to C-HR will further broaden its appeal,” he said.
“Our customers are demanding an alternative powertrain that delivers strong performance, refinement and low fuel consumption, and hybrid answers that need.
The hybrid will be offered as an option in the biggest selling two-wheel drive, Koba variant, that accounts for almost half of all C-HR sales.
The entry-level two-wheel drive C-HR and all-wheel drive C-HR variants will continue to be powered by a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine that drives through a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The hybrid powertrain also gets a CVT that helps deliver fuel consumption of just 4.3L/100km.
Along with the new powertrain option, the upgraded C-HR features a range of exterior design enhancements including new LED headlights, tail lights and alloy wheels.
There’s also a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
